Australia’s legendary batsman Steve Smith announced his retirement from ODIs. He played his last ODI match against India in the ongoing Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final. The Australian team lost the match against India and was knocked out of the tournament. He scored 73 runs in the big semi-final, but despite all this, India won the match by 4 wickets.

According to the Australian media, after the semi-final match, Steve Smith told his teammates about his retirement. Meanwhile, Smith will be available for Test cricket and Twenty20 Internationals.

If we talk about his ODI career, he made his ODI debut against West Indies. Surprisingly, he was selected for the Australian team for his bowling ability, but now he is considered one of the greatest batsmen in Australia. He took 2 wickets in his debut match. He played 170 ODIs in his career, in which he scored 5800 runs in 154 innings, including 12 centuries and 35 half-centuries. Meanwhile, he played at an average of 43.32. He played his best ODI innings of 164 runs against New Zealand in 2016. Smith was part of Australia’s ODI World Cup-winning team in 2015 and 2023 and took over the captaincy of the 50-over team after Michael Clarke’s retirement. He led Australia in 64 matches, winning 32 and losing 28, while four matches were inconclusive. He took over the captaincy on an interim basis for the Champions Trophy, replacing the injured Pat Cummins. Smith’s eyes will now be on the upcoming World Test Championship, and the T20I World Cup 2026, he will want to win them. Steve Smith is not considered the best batsman in T20Is and ODIs but he is one of the greatest batsmen of Test cricket. He has scored 10271 runs in his Test career so far. He scored 36 centuries and 41 half-centuries. The player who came to cricket for his bowling abilities, but today he has become one of the greatest batsmen in Test cricket. He has taken 64 international wickets in his international career. Apart from his national team, he has also played for some franchises in the IPL. He has been a part of Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kochi Tuskers Kerala, Pune Warriors India, Rising Pune Super Giants, Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals.
